The possibility of becoming disabled and unable to work is something everyone should consider if they are concerned about their long-term financial stability.  Disability insurance can shoulder much of the burden from a disability, paying out between 65%-85% of your previous monthly wages to keep your bills paid, but that’s only the first step in a very long road ahead.

Adapting to life with a disability is difficult and brings with it a lot of pain and stress.  This might seem overwhelming at first, but it is manageable!  We spend a lot of time working with people who have become disabled, and we have a few tips to make the transition go more easily.

Five Tips for Adjusting to Life with A Disability

  1. Express your feelings

Feelings of sadness, anger, frustration, even rage are common and 100% normal.  Find outlets to let these feelings out – expressing them helps you to work through them.  If you repress your feelings, it becomes much harder to stabilize your emotional state and move on with a positive attitude.

  1. Research your condition and your rights

Depending on the type of disability you have, you may be entitled to certain extra rights and accommodations.  In general, it will be on you to know your legal rights and advocate for yourself in day to day life.  Researching your condition and its legal status will help you a lot!

  1. Find new hobbies

If your disability is preventing you from doing activities you enjoy, look for new hobbies that you can still participate in.  Keeping yourself busy and engaged is important for healing both your body and your mind!

  1. Join online or offline support groups

One of the greatest things about the modern Internet age is that you are never alone.  Whatever condition you are dealing with, you can find other people who have gone through it or are going through it now.  There might be local support groups, or you might have to go online but either way, find people who can support you.

  1. Maintain your health

Depression often leads to reduced exercise, poor diet, and other problems – but try to keep yourself healthy.  A happy body leads to a happy mind, and you’ll be able to move on more quickly.
